The Secular Evolution of Disk Structural Parameters

چکیده
We present a comprehensive series of simulations to study the secular evolution of disk galaxies expected in a LCDM universe. Our simulations are organized in a hierarchy of increasing complexity, ranging from rigid-halo collisionless simulations to fully live simulations with gas and star formation. Our goal is to examine which structural properties of disk galaxies may result from secular evolution rather than from hierarchical assembly. In the vertical direction, we find that various mechanisms lead to heating, the strongest of which is the buckling instability of a bar, which leads to peanut-shaped bulges; these can be recognized face-on even in the presence of gas. We find that bars are robust structures that survive buckling and require a large (∼ 20% of the total mass of the disk) central mass concentration to be destroyed. This can occur in dissipative simulations, where bars induce strong gas inflows, but requires that radiative cooling overcome heating. We show how angular momentum redistribution leads to increasing central densities and disk scale lengths and to profile breaks at large radii. The breaks in these simulations are in excellent agreement with observations, even when the evolution is collisionless. Disk scale-lengths increase even when the total disk angular momentum is conserved; thus mapping halo angular momenta to scale-lengths is non-trivial. A decomposition of the resulting profile into a bulge+disk gives structural parameters in reasonable agreement with observations although kinematics betray their bar nature. These findings have important implications for galaxy formation models, which have so far ignored or introduced in a very simplified way the effects of non-axisymmetric instabilities on the morphological evolution of disk galaxies. Bulges or Bars from Secular Evolution?
We use high resolution collisionless N -body simulations to study the secular evolution of disk galaxies and in particular the final properties of disks that suffer a bar and perhaps a bar-buckling instability. Although we find that bars are not destroyed by the buckling instability, when we decompose the radial density profiles of the secularly-evolved disks into inner Sérsic and outer exponen...
متن کاملSecular Evolution in Disk Galaxies: Pseudobulge Growth and the Formation of Spheroidal Galaxies
Updating Kormendy & Kennicutt (2004, ARA&A, 42, 603), we review internal secular evolution of galaxy disks. One consequence is the growth of pseudobulges that often are mistaken for true (merger-built) bulges. Many pseudobulges are recognizable as cold, rapidly rotating, disky structures. Bulges have Sérsic function brightness profiles with index n > ∼ 2 while most pseudobulges have n < ∼ 2. Re...
متن کاملSecular Evolution and the Growth of Pseudobulges in Disk Galaxies
Galactic evolution is in transition from an early universe dominated by hierarchical clustering to a future dominated by secular processes. These result from interactions involving collective phenomena such as bars, oval disks, spiral structure, and triaxial dark halos. A detailed review is in Kormendy & Kennicutt (2004). This paper provides a summary illustrated in part with different galaxies...
متن کاملNear-Infrared bulge-disk correlations of lenticular galaxies
We consider the luminosity and environmental dependence of structural parameters of lenticular galaxies in the near-infrared K band. Using a two-dimensional galaxy image decomposition technique, we extract bulge and disk structural parameters for a sample of 36 lenticular galaxies observed by us in the K band. By combining data from the literature for field and cluster lenticulars with our data...
متن کاملSecular evolution in galaxies
New observations in favour of a significant role of secular evolution are reviewed: central star formation boosted in pseudo-bulge barred galaxies, relations between bulge and disk, evidence for rejuvenated bulges. Numerical simulations have shown that secular evolution can occur through a cycle of bar formation and destruction, in which the gas plays a major role. Since bars are weakened or de...
